Compliance demands drive content management market

23 June 2006

Content management software is rapidly becoming a key component of the enterprise information infrastructure, according to market watcher IDC. It reports that sales of content management applications will experience double-digit growth over the next few years, through to 2010.

“Customers have realised that they cannot conduct business if they can’t find or manage information,” says Susan Feldman, research vice president at IDC.

The content management software market, including document management and web content management, grew at a rate of 11.5% in 2005. This strong growth is forecast to continue, as business leaders seek to better manage and leverage content. Compliance demands and improved risk management capabilities are also factors in increasing demand, reports IDC.

Content access tools, such as search, text mining and categorisation software, are becoming increasingly important to business users, as they seek to enhance their ability to find information amid the growing volume of corporate data. IDC reports that global sales reached $976 million in 2005, up 32% year-on-year.

However, IDC research also shows that there are still many businesses, and many areas within companies that have not implemented content management systems. According to IDC, 40% of enterprises still lack a commercial content management system (CMS), and within companies that have adopted CMS, large groups of users remain under served.
