EMC captures Captiva

25 February 2006

Deal worth $275 to expand content management offering.

25 October 2005 Storage giant EMC Corporation is to strengthen its content management portfolio, having reached agreement to acquire document imaging vendor Captiva Software for $275 million.

The deal, which is expected to close either late 2005 or early 2006, represents a further foray into the content management market which was triggered by EMC's purchase of Documentum in 2003.

The acquisition is part of EMC's wider strategy to provide information lifecycle management (ILM) applications. Captiva, specialises in input management, for digitising paper-based information. EMC executives regard this as an important element in the management of business information.

President of EMC Dave DeWalt said: "This acquisition will serve as an increasingly important element of EMC's enterprise archiving strategy. This will enable customers to benefit from holistic policies for classification, retention, retrieval, search and access across all information types."

Previously, the two companies partnered with Captica's InputAccell software incorporated into the EMC Documentum platform. But while the acquisition will strengthen EMC's underlying content management suite, it will continue to develop Captiva as an open platform.
