PC sales continue to rise

Low-cost and portable PCs are main drivers.
19 October 2005 Investment in low cost and portable units is increasing the volumes of PCs being sold according to analysts, as businesses take advantage of favourable terms to update their PC estate.
Analyst group IDC reports a 17.1% increase in PC shipments during the third quarter of 2005 as compared to the year-ago period.
"We are seeing a combination of PC replacements and new users responding to low-cost milestones, "said Loren Loverde, director of IDC's PC tracking unit.
In terms of vendors, Dell continues to lead the market, having accounted for 18% of the 52 million units shipped during the third quarter. But rival Hewlett-Packard (HP) grew at a slightly higher rate than Dell.
Meanwhile, Lenovo fared well during its second quarter since acquiring IBM's PC business. Total shipments were up 13% from the same quarter a year earlier, with record volumes across form factors. IDC said the growth reflects the company's success integrating IBM and Lenovo and growing comfort with the new company among clients.
"Slowing economic growth should eventually constrain PC demand, but for the moment, the outlook remains quite strong," says Loverde.
