Security and integration remain the top technology priorities for IT decision-makers, according to a new survey of CIOs by analyst group Gartner. The results show that CIOs are increasingly aware of the priority to make IT systems secure from internal as well as external threats. They also appreciate the importance of more closely integrated systems and the need to provide greater data availability.
Gartner found that "forward-looking" CIOs are using the slow economy to implement e-enablement technologies. Web services, network management and storage management are also being deployed in order to address integration and data-availability issues. Web services will still be high on the CIO agenda by 2006, but alongside it will be business process management and data mining. By then, technologies for the 'real-time enterprise' will also have come to the fore.
Meanwhile, Gartner found that the most important management issues for CIOs today are: the need to provide guidance to the board; to demonstrate IT's value to the business; and to improve IT governance. The top business trends of the year, on the other hand, have included budget pressures, data security concerns and the need for faster innovation.
