The slow recovery in the IT labour market continued in 2003, but gains were not dramatic, according to a survey by the National Computing Centre (NCC). Salaries grew 3.7% on average in 2003, an increase comparable to that reported in 2002, with the biggest increases in the utilities (4.4%) and government (4.3%) sectors. The smallest growth was reported in the IT services sector (3.2%).

The ratio of IT contractors to permanent staff grew significantly, from about one-in-14 in 2002 to about one-in-eight in 2003. About 30% of organisations used contractors, up marginally on the previous year. Day rates were unchanged.

The survey also found that the greatest demand for IT staff in the next two years will be in user support, with an 11% growth rate predicted, and in network support, where there will be a 7.4% rise.
