Application platform suite vendors

BEA

BEA's WebLogic Enterprise Platform is one of the main options available to enterprises for J2EE application development and deployment. The company now has its own vision of SOA - Liquid Computing - for which it is developing QuickSilver, a message broker and web services manager. Some argue that QuickSilver is comparable to an ESB.

IBM

IBM and Microsoft together have been responsible for most of the industry momentum behind web services. IBM's stack includes messaging, integration, development, modelling and BPM tools. The addition of BPEL (business process execution language) capabilities to WebSphere to produce WebSphere Business Integration Server shows it wants to take a leading position in the move to SOA.

Microsoft

Microsoft is one of the big drivers of web services and is now talking about the SOA. Microsoft has released developer tools, programming languages, client-side software and server software as part of its .NET framework. Despite facing the massed ranks of J2EE proponents, Microsoft is at least head-to-head in terms of developer adoption and deployments and certainly has the mindshare.

Oracle

Oracle's recent acquisition of Collaxa and rebranding of the company's BPEL Server as its own means it finally has a full BPM and web services suite. In conjunction with Application Server 10g and Oracle's application suite and development tools, Oracle BPEL Process Manager (as it is now called) should put Oracle at the top of many IT shopping lists.

SAP

In 2003 the German ERP giant released SAP NetWeaver, its own integration and application platform. SAP is busy exhorting the benefits of SOA to its users, and is upgrading the still somewhat disjointed NetWeaver suite to the point where it can be used for SOA deployments.

The MySAP package is also being "service oriented" - a radical overhaul.
