HP holds onto lead in EMEA PC market

10 February 2006

PC demand in Europe, the Middle East and Asia (EMEA) grew by 17% in the first quarter of 2004.

PC demand in Europe, the Middle East and Asia (EMEA) grew by 17% in the first quarter of 2004. According to researchers at Gartner, PC vendors shipped 14.9 million units in the three months, up from 12.7 million in the same period a year earlier.

The growth was fuelled by strong demand in the business market. Buyers in EMEA have also been exploiting the increased purchasing power that has resulted from the continued decline of the dollar.

Hewlett-Packard (HP) continues to hold the market leadership position in the region with a 15.8% share. But Dell, with 11.1%, is closing fast, having increased its share of the total market by 1.6%. In comparison, HP's share declined by 0.5%.

Trailing those two are Fujitsu Siemens, Acer and IBM. Acer recorded the highest shipment growth during the period, with a 2.1% rise. The Taiwanese company increased its market share by 2% and almost doubled its shipments. The result can be attributed to its better penetration of the distribution and retail channels.

Meanwhile, at a global level, Dell opened up its lead over HP by taking 16.5% of the worldwide market versus the 14% held by HP.
