Information Age: News, analysis & insight for IT & business leaders

Wishful thinking

10 February 2006

According to Dominic Barrow Associates, most organisations plan their bottomline IT costs on an annual basis, although most investment in information technologyis rarely realised within a year.

The value of most investment in information technology, as many independent experts and much experience will testify, is rarely realised within a year. In fact, a normal payback period is three to five years or more.

According to research by Dominic Barrow Associates, however, most organisations plan and agree their bottomline IT costs on an annual basis. In fact, only 15 of a sample of 100 IT directors said they plan spending over a three-to-five year cycle. That suggests there is something of a disconnect between those responsible for setting the budgets and those seeking to get a business return.
