While most areas of technology have experienced a sharp drop in spending, CIOs report continued investment in information security technologies since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

According to research from analysts at Meta Group, organisations have incrementally increased spending on security over the past 12 months. In November 2001, 67% of CIO respondents said they spent between 0% and 5% of their IT budget on security, while 33% spent 5% or more. At that point in time, IT security focused mainly on back-up and recovery investments, as opposed to more strategic projects such as implementing new firewalls or authentication applications.

But this emphasis is due to shift. In 2003, Meta Group predicts that more than half (55%) of these companies will spend more than 5% on technologies such as intrusion detection systems, in an attempt to address increased threats of cyber-terrorism and internal security issues.
