Multimedia messaging is still to make an impact.
MultimedIa messaging (MMS) has yet to make any real impact with mobile phone users, according to research carried out by market research company NOP.
As few as 17% of adult mobile phone users have been persuaded to try MMS, which enables subscribers to send pictures, video clips or other rich media content to or from a mobile handset. The survey found that mobile subscribers had little idea about the costs of multi-media messaging, with 27% putting the cost at 25p but 6% believing it costs £1 per message. (Vodafone charges 36p for one MMS.)
The survey, commissioned by messaging product company Sicap, also found that 17% of respondents with an MMS device did not know how to send one.
However, the company expects to see an upswing in interest during this summer's sporting events, including the football European Championships in Portugal and the Olympic Games in Greece. According to Sicap, MMS volumes grew significantly in Asia during the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea.
