Google plans business app store

Search giant to launch marketplace for third party enhancements to its online applications, according to reports

Search and cloud computing giant Google is planning to launch an online marketplace through which third party software developers will be able to sell enhancements to its online applications, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.

The company already has what it calls a Solutions Marketplace, which lists and profiles add-ons to and services associated with its online applications. According to today’s report, Google plans to make this the actual store front through which users would pay for the add-ons.

It is unclear whether Google will offer to host the third party enhancements on its infrastructure, as Salesforce.com – whose AppExchange was the prototype for the ‘app store’ model popularize by Apple – does.

Google has neither confirmed nor denied the report.
