Having contracted in 2009, the enterprise software market grew by 8.5% last year thanks to the economic recovery, Gartner finds
The worldwide enterprise software market returned to growth last year thanks to the economic recovery, research by analyst company Gartner has found. The market grew 8.5% during 2010 to reach $245 billion, having shrunk by 2.5% during 2009.
"The year represented a return to solid footing as the market recovered and expanded in terms of revenue and geographies," said Joanne Correia, managing vice president at Gartner. She added that growth was parcticularly strong in emerging markets during the year.

All of the of the major software vendors returned to growth, both organically and inorganically, during the year, Gartner found.
Software giant Microsoft retained its position at the top of the market share list, with a 22.4% share. However, the report stressed that IBM would place number one if Microsoft's consumer sales were ignored.
Oracle posted the best growth numbers for the financial year, with a revenue increase of 19.4%. The systems and software vendor achieved growth across all software markets; its business intelligence and security divisions were among the fastest growing.
Virtualisation software vendor VMWare posted the highest overall growth, posting a 41% increase in sales during the year.
