BlackBerry shrugs off iPhone competition with strong sales

18 December 2009

Research In Motion (RIM) posts increased revenues based on record sales of BlackBerry

BlackBerry manufacturer Research in Motion recorded a 11% rise in revenues to $3.92 billion during its third quarter, on the back of an a major increase in BlackBerry sales and subscribers.

The Canadian group shipped more than ten million devices during the quarter, while also expanding its subscriber base by 4.4 million. Net income for the quarter grew 59% to $628.4 million.

Judging from the company’s figures, competitors such as the iPhone and other smartphones have not encroached on RIM’s territory to the extent experts had predicted. “That’s a major positive surprise because people have been very sceptical bout the February quarter," an investment analyst told Reuters. "People wrote off RIM too soon.”
