Dell to partner with Baidu on smartphone, tablets

6 September 2011

The second biggest PC-maker will provide smartphones loaded with the Chinese search engine's mobile OS for users in China

Dell will sell smartphones and tablet devices based on a new operating system from Chinese search engine giant Baidu, the company has announced.

Baidu, which holds around 80% of the search market in China, launched the mobile operating system last week. It is based on Google's Android mobile operating sytem.

Marketwatch blogger John Dvorak said last Friday that Dell should take advantage of HP's withdrawal from the PC business and the changing of the guard at Apple to take over "the bulk of the PC industry".

"If any company is in the driver’s seat of a $200-plus billion industry, it’s Dell. All it has to do is execute," he wrote.
