Mobile developers to focus on enterprise apps

24 August 2011

Three quarters of mobile software developers will be porting enterprise applications to mobile devices in the coming year, research finds

Three quarters of mobile developers will be extending enterprise software to mobile clients in the next year, according to a survey from Evans Data Corporation (EDC).

Janel Garvin, CEO of EDC, said that mobile devices have come into its own in enterprise. "It’s a very heterogeneous target with multiple devices and device types being introduced by users, leaving IT management and enterprise developers to cope," Garvin said.

According to Garvin, the study also underlined the importance of both web and native apps in mobile enterprise development, due to the need to support clients across a wide range of mobile platforms.

Surprisingly, the majority of respondents plan to use Google’s Android Marketplace and Microsoft’s Windows Marketplace for Mobile as their preferred channels over Apple's App Store, the survey found.

The developers listed WiFi spoofing as their top security concern. This is a technique whereby a hacker can send out a fake wireless network for mobile devices to join, allowing them to intercept any data sent over that network.

The survey examined the intentions of 400 mobile developers across the world, also findinig that application programming interfaces (API) for software as a service offerings will be in high demand from developers over the coming year.
