Energy costs drive environmental policies

Runaway energy costs have become the chief focus for IT professionals attempting to deliver any form of environmental policy for their organisation. They are beginning to put pressure on manufacturers to produce more energy-efficient products.

According to Economist Intelligence Unit research on behalf of management consultancy PwC, the fundamental reason behind the rising interest in green technology is escalating energy expenditure. The desire is now feeding into buying behaviour, with many vendors polled reporting that they have introduced energy-efficient products in response to customer demand.

This ‘greening’ of IT has persuaded hardware manufacturers to look at ways of reducing the use of hazardous materials and packaging, and making greater use of recyclable materials. Software companies are now improving the power management of their products.
