Novell to acquire Managed Objects

15 October 2008

Systems vendor picks up business service management (BSM) pure-play for an undisclosed sum

IT systems management vendor Novell has announced a definitive agreement to acquire Managed Objects, which sells business service management (BSM) software.

Managed Objects’ technology allows organisations to link IT systems to the business services they support, and therefore define downtime, outages and budgetary requirements in terms of business metrics.

The company’s products include a configuration management database (CMDB) – a repository for data relating to hardware systems and how they are configured.

Novell currently positions itself as a data centre management tools vendor. According to Managed Objects CEO Siki Giunta, there is a ‘very little’ overlap between the two companies’ product sets, and ‘tremendous synergy’ between the two organisations.

“This acquisition extends Novell’s strategy of making IT work as one in the data centre,” said Joe Wagner, Novell’s senior vice president of systems and resource management. “We are unique in providing technology-agnostic and proven cross-platform solutions that span both the physical and virtual worlds - all in one unified view.”

The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Novell’s share price rose slightly after the deal was announced, but has since dropped below its original value.
