'We're doing more with less,' say data centre managers

13 February 2009

Data centre managers are struggling to meet increased user expectations with fewer and fewer resources

Three-quarters of data centre managers surveyed for Symantec’s 2008 State of the Data Center report said user expectations were rising even when the primary pressure on managers was to reduce costs. Around 60% reported service levels becoming more difficult to meet.

Staffing is also proving to be a major headache for data centre managers. Over a third reported their facility was understaffed while 43% said finding qualified applicants was a significant problem. To address the issue companies are relying heavily on both outsourcing and training, with 78% of respondents expecting this budget to rise or stay constant over the next two years.

When asked about Green IT projects, data managers ranked “reducing electricity consumption” and “cooling costs” significantly ahead of “a sense of community responsibility” as a priority. The underlying sentiment: successful ‘green’ programmes were those with a focus on cost reduction.

Worryingly, 9% of data centre managers said their disaster recovery plan was “informal or undocumented” while only 35% said it was ‘above average’.
