Launching its new information management focus, IT giant integrates its big data analytics software into Autonomy's data management platform
Hewlett-Packard has revealed the first fruits of its renewed focus on information management technology at its Discover conference in Vienna.
Among its annoucements was the integration of Vertica, the 'big data' analytics software HP acquired in February, into the next version of IDOL, the data management platform of Autonomy, which it acquired in October.
"The combination of Autonomy’s information processing layer with Vertica’s high performance real-time analytics engine allows organisations to analyse 100% of unstructured, semi-structured and structured information in a consistent, uniform way," the company said in a statement.
It also announced a range of appliances based on Autonomy's archiving, eDiscovery and search software; a service offering to help business adopt Vertica; and a new deduplication appliance called HP B6200 StoreOnce Backup System.
HP was something of an also-ran in information management and business intelligence during former CEO Mark Hurd's tenure, despite the fact that he had joined the company from data warehouse applicance pioneer Teradata. The company stopped selling NeoView, the data warehouse product launched by Hurd, earlier this year.
Meanwhile, IBM and others shifted the focus of the IT industry onto information management and analytics, in part due to the rapid growth of data but also because the market for enterprise applications is largely saturated.
Shifting its focus in the same direction was an initiative of Hurd's successor Leo Apotheker and one that has survived his subsequent dismissal.
