Data governance cannot be rolled out accross an organisation in one go
For large organisations, applying data governance best practice in each division and to every category of data would be a multi-year, perhaps even an infinite task.
To deliver tangible results within an acceptable time frame, therefore, organisations must prioritise categories of data or operational processes where the benefits of data governance will be most immediately felt.
Lapkin advises that organisations take a risk management approach to prioritising data governance projects. “There are different types of information assets in the enterprise with different levels of value and different levels of exposure.”
A healthcare organisation, for example, might prioritise governance of patient data to reduce instances of regulatory non-compliance. A product or services-focused company, Lapkin explains, may focus on the quality of customer data in order to boost cross-selling opportunities. “What you don’t want to do is go out and do an exhaustive assessment of all the information in the enterprise.”
