Email addiction in the UK

19 June 2007

Half of Brits email-dependent.

Great Britain is a nation addicted to email, according to research published this week. Roughly half of the UK population ‘could not carry on’ if email access was taken away.

The most email-addicted demographic in the UK was the 25 to 34-year-old bracket, 50% of whom said they relied on email, according to the poll conducted by ICM and backed software-as-a-service desktop applications provider Nasstar.

But email is not a young man’s game; the proportion of individuals in the 35 to 44 age bracket who claimed to be reliant on email access was higher (44%) than among teenagers (41%).

”While teenagers are passionate about their mobile phones and texting in particular, the older generations are relying more and more on email because of its use in a business capacity,” said Charles Black, CEO of Nasstar.

Women were slightly ahead of men in their dependence upon email, (41% compared to 38%), while the South East of England was the region where most email addicts reside; Wales was the least email obsessed region.
