Tories to make government IT contracts public

11 February 2010

David Cameron pledges to publish all government contracts worth over £25k from January 2011

In a live video presentation to the TED conference in California, Conservative party leader David Cameron announced that he would make all government procurement contracts worth over £25,000 publically available, in a move to increase transparency and discourage waste.

The Tory leader gave a brief summary of the UK’s most disastrous government projects, singling out the ongoing NHS IT unification program and the much-delayed offender management system for particular opprobrium.

The party issued a press release containing the following quote from shadow chancellor George Osborne: “Our commitment to publish government contracts in full is the most radical transparency announcement ever made by a British political party, and will enable the public to hold ministers and civil servants to account like never before.  This policy will help us to cut government spending, root out waste and empower the public and bring in a new age of transparency and accountability.”
