Project planning and delivery dominates CIOs' time, Deloitte poll reveals, but if they had an extra day many would spend it on strategy
Chief information officers spend more time overseeing project plans or delivery than any other activity, according to a poll by accountancy firm and advisory Deloitte. If they had more time in the week, many of them would spend it on strategy.
Deloitte polled 55 CIOs at a recent event, asking them how they spent their time. On average, respondents spent 39% of their time on planning and delivering projects, 27% on IT leadership and talent, 20% on managing suppliers and 14% on 'innovation / analytics'.
The poll asked CIOs how they would spend an extra day in the week. Eleven respondents (20% of those who gave an answer) said they would spend it on strategy, more than any other response, including non-working related activities (19%). Eight respondents (14%) would spend the day on innovation, six on talent development and five on keeping up to speed with developments in the IT industry.
They were also asked how they spend would an extra 10% on top of their IT budget. The most popular single answer, with seven responses, was to spend it on either hiring or developing talent. That was followed by mobile technology, with six respondents, then by innovation and analytics, with five respondents each.
