China shuts down hacker training network - official sources

8 February 2010

Government shuts down China’s largest cybercriminal portal, according to state media

Authorities in China claim they have closed the nation’s biggest training website for hackers. The country's government run Xinhua news agency says that Black Hawk Safety Net, which provides hacking tools and lessons to more than 180,000 members, was shut down in late November with three arrests being made.

Police in Henan Province – where the website is based – are also said to have confiscated several web servers and computers, as well as freezing approximately $250,000 in assets.

It is not clear why the state administered media outlet has disclosed this information only now, although it could tie in with the ongoing tussle between the governments of China and the US regarding supposed cyber attacks on search giant Google, along with a number of other US technology firms.

In January, Google reported that it had been the victim of a large-scale co-ordinated hacking attempt from within China, prompting the company to consider withdrawing from the country altogether.

This has since escalated into a heated dispute between the two countries' governments, and China’s claim that it has closed Black Hawk Safety Net could be intended to show that authorities are serious about threats to cybersecurity.
