Angry customer hacks Paypal UK's twitter account

6 July 2011

PayPal's UK twitter account publishes negative comments after apparent hijacking by a disgruntled customer

PayPal UK's official twitter handle began to tweet negative messages about the payments giant on Tuesday, after an angry customer took control of the account.

While in control of PayPal's twitter feed, the person posted links to the anti-PayPal website paypalsucks.com, which encourages web users to seek alternative online payment methods.

"PAYPAL CAN FREEZE YOUR FUNDS FOR NO REASON, DO NOT USE PAYPAL!!," one of the tweets read.

In a statement, PayPal confirmed that its twitter feed was targeted by hackers, but assured customers that none of their data was at risk.

"PayPal’s UK customer systems and data have not been breached or hacked in any way. There is no link between customer systems and our Twitter account," the company said.

"We apologise for the bad language and childish nature of tweets that came from this account at the time," PayPal's twitter feed said after it came back up.

The twitter hijack is the second large scale incident of the sort this week. Hackers to control of the Fox News twitter handle this week, and tweeted a false report claiming that Barack Obama had been assassinated.
