Autonomy sees 1m augmented reality installs 'in weeks'

27 July 2011

Aurasma, the UK information management provider's AR client, enjoys "strong launch" as company reports 16% revenue hike

One million users installed Autonomy's new augmented reality software Aurasma in "just a few weeks" after its launch, the UK-based information management provider revealed today.

Aurasma, which was launched in May of this year, is a mobile application that uses a smartphone's camera to recognise branded imagery, such as a newspaper logo or film poster. It allows companies to supply additional marketing materials when the user points their phone at this imagery.

"The number of people using Aurasma to bring together the virtual and physical makes Aurasma the most broadly-deployed mobile platform of its kind," said Autonomy CEO Dr Mike Lynch in a statement.

Autonomy says it has signed up 100 partners, including the New York Times and the London Underground, to the service. Aurasma is still in its "pre-revenue period", the company said.

The company made the claim as it reported a 16% year-on-year revenue increase to $247 million in the second quarter of its financial year.

Among the drivers for this growth was uptake of the hosted version of its IDOL information management platform. Revenues from IDOL Cloud rose 37% for the quarter to $64 million.

"Autonomy now has over 31 Petabytes of customer data under management, making us one of the world’s largest private cloud companies," Lynch said.
