Servers holding 1.8 million customer records accessed, with members' services taken offline
Japanese video game developer Square Enix has said that servers holding 1.8 million customers' details were accessed earlier this week.
The compromised server related to the 'Square Enix Members' service, and held details of users in North America and Japan. In a statement, Square Enix said that it had reported the breach to the Japanese government and had informed all Square Enix members of the breach.
Its own investigation found that no credit card details or user logins were taken during the breach, but Square Enix said it would be conducting a broader investigation over the coming days. The affected service will remain unavailable as a result.
A spokeswoman told French news agency AFP that the affected servers stored the customers' names and email addresses, and that many members also registered their postal addresses and phone numbers.
"We are yet to learn whether illegal access was gained to our clients' information," she said. "But we have asked our customers to be aware of the incident in case they receive suspicious messages using our name."
From May this year, Japanese entertainment giant Sony suffered a string of cyber attacks, with more than 100 million user details lost. Square Enix was also hit with a minor breach at the time, when the email addresses of 25,000 customers as well as the CVs of 250 job applicants were leaked after an attack on a European subsidiary.
