Consumer concern over data protection growing

Plus, over 850,000 people have lost data in a public place, survey finds

Nine out of 10 people in the UK believe that their personal data is not completely secure in the hands of the businesses they patronise, a survey by insurance provider RSA has found.

Almost half (46%) said banks and retailers are not doing enough to protect their data. And just over half (56%) of respondents are more concerned about identity fraud and the security of their personal data than they were six months ago.

Ninety percent of respondents said that they disapproved of employees taking customer data out of the office, and said they thought that company insiders posed the greatest threat to information security.

The report also found that 868,000 people had lost data in public places.
