But the industry's offerings are confusing, report finds
Economic uncertainty, increasingly distributed enterprises and tighter regulatory environments are fuelling strong demand for identity and access management (IAM) technologies, says Forrester Research.
However, despite growing awareness of security issues around employee, contractor and partner access to data and applications, the analyst firm says IT executives are frustrated by a lack of understanding of the available technologies and the market providing them.
A Forrester survey of IT security leaders in France, Germany and the UK showed that three-quarters regarded governance, risk and compliance as key drivers for their adoption of IAM. That contrasted sharply with the views of IT managers in the US, only 24% of whom cited governance, risk and compliance as key.
Forrester also found that a quarter of respondents believed they could reach their identity and access goals without specific IAM tools, which were generally regarded as too costly (36%) and too complex (32%). Passwords remained the most popular method of authentication in most instances.
