CIOs ignoring Euro crisis, warns Gartner analyst

Chief information officers are failing to plan for the outcome of the European economic crisis despite the huge implications it could have on IT systems, a Gartner analyst has warned.

Andrea di Maio says that the potential break-up of the European currency would impact internal and customer facing systems, while the economic fallout from the crisis could radically alter supply chains.

But at a conference of around 200 CIOs in London this week, fewer than ten had plans in place for how to deal with the Euro crisis, di Maio wrote on his blog yesterday.

Speaking to Information Age today, di Maio said that most businesses to do have plans in place. "But CIOs are not being invited to the table, despite IT being one of the most important factors," he said.

This is no excuse for CIOs not to act, however. "CIOs know what is going on," he said, and must plan accordingly.

Di Maio added that monitoring the state of the European economy could be a valuable use case for big data analytics. "There are clues out there in your current behaviour, in social media and in political indicators," he said. "This is an excellent area to be able to make sense of all that data."
