Bank of Shanghai chooses Teradata

Confidence in the data warehousing specialist remains strong.

ATM and cash register maker NCR’s recently spun off data warehousing division Teradata beat off competition from the likes of Hewlett Packard (HP), Sun Microsystems and IBM to secure a deal with the Bank of Shanghai (BOS) to build its new enterprise data warehouse (EDW).

BOS, which is one of the fastest growing banks in China with over 208 branches, wanted to achieve a single view of its business for analysis across multiple departments and systems.

BOS implemented its core banking system Temenos’ T24 in May 2006 but as the bank grew at a rapid pace it found it needed more penetrative business intelligence and analytics tools to gain a deeper understanding of the business. BOS took the decision to build an enterprise data warehouse platform in order to ensure high quality data for smooth business operations.

The selection will come as a welcome endorsement of Teradata, whose separation from NCR is now nearly complete.NCR announced in January its intention to spin off its data warehousing unit, in a move intended to enable the respective businesses to better focus their business strategies.

The data warehousing subsidiary will soon be recognised as an independent company, potentially leaving it vulnerable to acquisition by a high-tech industry player.
