EDS reclaims UK IT services crown

It’s a turbulent time in the UK IT services market.

EDS has reclaimed the top spot from IBM in the latest IT services market rankings from market watcher Ovum.

Ovum’s findings, released Thursday, show that after a period of double digit growth Texas-headquartered company EDS is back in poll position in the UK software and IT services (S/ITS) industry rankings, as measured by revenues, thanks in part to a £4 billion deal with the Ministry of Defence.

There is a lot of movement elsewhere in the table, with French firm Capgemini enjoying double digit growth taking it from sixth position a year ago to fourth in the latest findings. UK based business process outsourcing player Capita is also enjoying a period of accelerated growth, moving from eighth place to fifth. Both Capgemini and Capita overtook US firm Accenture, which slipped three places in the rankings, now residing in seventh place as its revenues dropped 15% on year ago figures.

Overall, the US companies are experiencing a decline in market share note the report’s authors. Despite occupying nine of the current top 20 positions on the S/ITS leadership board, the US is losing its foothold in the [global/US/UKEuropean?] market. According to Ovum, the US players’ representation in the top 50 IT services providers has fallen from 54% to 47% in the last three years.

There is little movement among the UK-based companies, which have largely managed to retain their market share experiencing only a slight depreciation (from 29% to 28%). UK representation in the top 50 has also dipped a little, from 26 companies to 23.

Unsurprisingly, India stands out, having tripled its share of the top 50 rankings since 2003. But despite such rapid growth, Indian companies still only comprise 5% of the UK S/ITS market. Japan, with just one representative in the top 50 – Fujitsu Siemens – claims a bigger slice of the pie than India.
