The government launches an initiative to tackle IT's role in global warming.
The British government has established a taskforce charged identifying energy-efficient ways of using computer equipment.
The taskforce, Green Shift, will oversee a pilot of a ‘green’ PC service, where users will access their applications via a dumb terminal connected to a centralised hosting service.
Energy-efficient equipment will be deployed throughout the data centre, and organisers believe this approach could reduce energy consumption by as much as 98%.
The pilot is due to kick off in early 2008. Green Shift will also be examining ways of reducing the number of resources consumed in the production of PCs by 75%.
The taskforce is a public-private partnership, which is led by Manchester City Council.
