Companies need to look beyond the initial cost of going green and consider the long-term...
The cost of going green is the biggest barrier to the successful implementation of more environmentally friendly IT infrastructures, according to a recent survey.
The research, undertaken by thin client specialist Neoware at the Citrix iForum, found that a quarter of IT managers questioned feel the initial costs involved are major stumbling block. A further 18% of respondents citied difficulties in replacing existing technology as a major obstacle.
Interestingly, 17% of respondents also cited a ‘lack of green products available’ as a difficulty, a surprising revelation given the strenuous efforts of many vendors -- including SunMicrosystems and Intel -- to market their latest environmentally friendly wares.
It does appear, however, that environmental concerns have established themselves on the CIO’s agenda, with 98% of those questioned suggesting the IT industry has a responsibility to become more environmentally friendly. A further 71% said that being ‘more green’ is high on their company’s list of priorities.
