In an unusually bold move, global reinsurance giant Swiss Re has revealed that it has implemented a web security gateway appliance to protect the organisation against web threats and to ensure regulatory compliance.
Provided by enterprise gateway security specialist Secure Computing, Webwasher guards against incoming threats such as malware and prevents outbound breaches such as data leaks. The product incorporates Secure Computing’s TrustedSource filtering system, which provides source-based reputation scores for web page content, messages, attachments and images.
Prior to the implementation Swiss Re’s security environment was comprised of multiple point solutions. The move to a more comprehensive product suite signals a growing trend among the corporate community to consolidate security environments onto a few integrated platforms.
The reinsurance giant also required an appliance that would allow the organisation flexibility in its security environment, says Christian Bai, senior systems engineer at Swiss Re. “Webwasher offers the highest level of flexibility because of its ability to define very granular rule sets and enforce them,” he explains.
The finance industry has traditionally been tightlipped about its product implementations due to the high risk profile of its operations. Swiss Re’s announcement signals the growing importance of security and compliance in bolstering the reputational capital of the larger corporate players.
