UK slow to adopt open source

Government not pushy enough, says survey.

UK businesses and public sector organisations fall behind those in the US and Western Europe when it comes to open source software adoption, according to a survey conducted by open source content management provider Alfresco.

The survey polled 10,000 Alfresco community members on their preferences for applications, infrastructure and operating systems.

According to the report’s authors, the drivers for open source adoption in the US differ from those in Europe. “The U.S. is leading open source adoption globally,” wrote Alfresco CEO Dr Ian Howells. “We believe the Global 2000 is seeking innovation and better value for their technology investments whereas in Europe open source adoption is often driven by governments seeking better value for their citizens.”

Hence the fact that the UK trails France, Spain, Italy and Germany in open source software adoption is attributable to ‘less government emphasis compared with other European countries.”
