Google unveils mobile plans

5 November 2007

Google will give away its mobile operating system to handset makers....

Internet advertising giant Google has finally come clean on its much-anticipated mobile phone plans and revealed it will release a mobile operating system.

Rumours of a Google mobile have circulated for months, however, its executives confirmed that its intention is to work with partners, rather than build its own devices.

“Today’s announcement is more ambitious than any single Google Phone that the press has been speculating about over the past few weeks,” said Google CEO Eric Schmidt in a statement.

The first devices, made by its partners Samsung, HTC, Motorola and LG – are expected to ship in the latter half of 2008.

The announcement increases the level of competition with rival Microsoft, which already makes a mobile operating system. Google’s decision to offer its system for free intensifies that competition yet further.

The announcement also comes days before the much anticipated Apple iPhone hits UK stores.
