Microsoft to build Siberian data centre

Power supply attracts software giant to the icy plains....  

Microsoft has announced its intention to build a data centre in Siberia in Russia.

As part of an agreement between the software giant and local authorities in the Irkutskin the region, the ground work has been laid for the largest data centre project in Russia to date, housing 10,000 servers.

It is the region’s abundant power supply that attracted the company to the region, said Microsoft Russia CEO Birger Steen – a 50 megawatt line is available locally.

No mention was made of the advantages to data centre heat management of locating a data centre in the frozen plains of Siberia.
