Tesco & Marks & Spencer take 'Green IT' lead
UK retailers are leading the Green IT charge, as high street giants commit to reduce the environmental impact of their technology.
Supermarket group Tesco has promised to halve its IT carbon footprint over the next few years – and aims to use technology to drive further efficiencies across the organisation.
Tesco estimates that IT currently accounts for 4% of its carbon footprint today, and will look to reduce that through the introduction of energy efficient data-centre-cooling systems, tills and electronic displays.
It is also investigating whether advanced supply chain technology could optimise the use of its haulage fleet.
Meanwhile, Marks & Spencer has signed a five-year £19 million infrastructure deal with IT services group Computacenter. Under the deal, 4,000 M&S office staff working across six locations will be supported with “environmentally friendly hardware configurations”. Computacenter will also take charge of recycling M&S's IT equipment.
