Barclays Bank gives customers free security software

Online banking customers to receive complete commercial security software suite from Kaspersky free of charge

Barclays Bank has announced that it will give its online banking customers a complete security software package from  Kaspersky Lab for free.

The software, which normally costs £51 a year, includes anti-virus software, anti-spyware and adware functionality, a firewall, parental controls and a spam filter.

“For the last two years we have offered customers free anti-virus software,” said Sean Gilchrist, the bank’s director of digital banking, “but as internet fraudsters become more sophisticated it is important that customers protect their computers from all threats and not just viruses.”

Users will be able to install the software on up to three computers per free licence.

Meanwhile, new research published this week found that residents of the UK are the most likely to be targeted by so-called 419 scam emails, which promise large amounts of money in exchange for bank account details. The UK receives 23% of the global total of these emails, the research from security vendor McAfee found.
