The Gen Y's work ethic isn't as poor as popularly thought, says a new study
The report, by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), found that 62% “would only work for organisations with strong values”, while 83% claimed to have joined their current employer for long-term career opportunities.
Half the workers surveyed said they work in the evenings if necessary, 43% during the weekend, and 29% during travel time. Only 7% agreed with the statement “there’s no point being excessively loyal to an organisation”.
Director of marketing and corporate affairs at CMI Jo Causon suggests that “Generation Y has been dismissed as self-centred, yet the evidence shows that this is not the case.”
“Overall there is a strong desire to develop at work and enjoy the job, with inability to progress a strong negative for them. Yet, at the same time, busy individuals working long hours can quickly become demotivated and leave. In an era where skills are at a premium, organisations need to be aware of this and act before it becomes reality.”
