SharePoint is a flexible product with powerful security architecture but with this flexibility comes complexity. Cryptzone conducted a survey amongst attendees at the UK SharePoint Saturday conference held in Nottingham, United Kingdom in November 2011. Respondents consisted of various Microsoft® SharePoint users, from basic users to administrators and developers from organisations of all sizes.
The survey was conducted anonymously to find out how SharePoint users perceive SharePoint security and the access rights associated with using SharePoint.

Through intelligent power management you can operate a more efficient Data Centre and save money. A study conducted by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) shows that power costs of a data centre consume up to 30% of a company’s IT budget. Surely you want to avoid this. Rather, you will want to improve the economic viability of your data centre and avoid server crashes.
This white paper explains how you can analyse the power consumption of data centres, ensure an optimum spread of energy load and retain reliability in the long term with the right form of management.

The consumerisation of the data centre
The consumerisation of employee's client devices is one of the most frequently discussed topics in IT, with workers bringing their home computers and smartphones into the workplace.
But does the force of consumerisation stretch deeper into the corporate IT infrastructure. This white paper from data centre services provider Colt argues that it does.
In 'Data Centre Consumerisation', Colt explains how using standardised, modular data centre components leads to fast and more efficient data centre build projects than the highly customised, bespoke approaches of the past.

IT departments have successfully applied automation to many of their most repetitive tasks, but one area of work that has so far resisted automation is application release management.
According to this white paper from IT automation supplier UC4, the typical application release requires as many as six or seven people working for multiple days to ensure that new functionality is successfully introduced without impairing existing systems.
The white paper explains why application release management has so far been so resistant to automation, the financial impact of that, and how organisations can successfully deploy application release automation (ARA).

Redesigning back-up for the virtual era
Virtualisation has delivered all manner of well documented benefits in the data centre but it has also added a degree complexity in certain areas, including back-up.
According to this IDC white paper, presented by information infrastructure provider EMC, the use of virtual infrastructure with legacy back-up systems can lead to issues including resource contention, virtual machine sprawl and impaired disaster recovery.
Not only can modernising the back-up estate resolve many issues, it can also save money. "It is one of the few projects that can generate funding and improve service levels at the same time," the white paper observes.

One of the key benefits associated with cloud computing is economic – the ability to match IT infrastructure spending to business demand. However, many organisations do not believe that cloud computing will reduce their IT costs overall.
That was one finding of a survey by Richardson Eyres, which asked strategic and operational IT decisions makers about their views and experience of cloud and virtualisation.
The survey found that providing flexible IT services and more resilient infrastructure were more important drivers for cloud adoption to most companies.

With data volumes growing and the frailties of tape-based storage looming large, the power of deduplication to reduce the back-up capacity that businesses require has made it popular technology in recent years.
This research report, by IT analyst group TheInfoPro, discovers precisely how popoular it has become. Based on more than 250 in-depth interviews with storage professionals at large enterprises, it shows that deduplication has been adopted by nearly 50% of organisations, with 40% planning to deploy it in the next year.
It also reveals precisely how organisations are using the features deduplication of to optimise their data centre operations.

Most organisations are still using tape-based storage media to back up their IT infrastructure. This approach means that recovering systems in the event of a disaster often requires physically locating a given tape, often at off-site location.
IDC analyst Robert Armatruda explains in this white paper, brought to you by EMC, using disk-based storage systems allows organisations to employ more sophisticated disaster recovery techniques.

Having been broadly stable for decades, the end-user computing environment is currently facing profound disruption.
One way or another, consumer mobile devices have become an intrinsic part of the business IT Infrastructure; workers are increasingly remote and mobile; and applications and data are being sourced from ever more sources.
This IDC Executive Brief document, sponsored by RES Software, explains why this situation calls for a more 'user-centric' approach to client computing, allowing employees to access the relevant systems and data wherever they are, and whatever device they might be using.
