Citigroup says $2.7m was stolen after cyber attack

Citigroup has confirmed reports that $2.7 million was stolen from customer accounts following a cyber attack earlier this year.

On Saturday, the Wall Street Journal reported that Citigroup warned the government that money was stolen from 3,400 customer accounts. Citigroup later confirmed the story with CNN.

"Customers are not liable for any fraud on the accounts and are 100% protected," it said.

The bank had previously claimed that no data that could be used to defraud customers had been stolen in the cyber attack, which took place in May but was revealed earlier this month.
