UK ID cards delayed

The UK’s controversial ID card scheme will be delayed until 2012 (two years later than planned) according to the Conservative Party, which claims to have obtained leaked documents.

Reasons for the delay were not explained but the document did provide new details on the scheme’s roll-out.

People whose professions require trust and reliable identification will receive the cards in the earliest phase of the scheme, followed by citizens where there is the “strongest national or personal benefit.”

The ID card scheme will also form part of the Borders Agency’s bid to strengthen “identity management for foreign nationals", according to the document.

The reported new date coincides with London’s Olympics.
