XML standard for biometrics in development

8 March 2001 An XML-based system for standardising biometric data transmission is being developed by standards organisation the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (Oasis).

Oasis is to form a committee to design an XML schema for biometric data, called the XML Common Biometric Format Technical Committee or XCBF. The schema will specify a standard way for biometric data – such as fingerprints or iris patterns – to be communicated and performed through web services.

The committee will also develop a standard file format for the exchange of the data by other means.

Biometrics has been the centre of increased attention since the 11 September terrorist attacks on the US for use in security systems. The systems can use the data to verify identity and grant access to the systems. Oasis says membership of the committee will be open to all organisations and individuals with interests in creating the schema.
