Busuu appoints new CTO and CCO, Joonas Kukkonen and Marc Munier

New CTO Kukkonen joins language learning app Busuu having previously led the development of Spotify‘s podcast mobile experience, while new CCO Munier has succeeded in helping companies to achieve growth targets.

Bernhard Niesner, co-founder and CEO at Busuu, said: “Both Joonas and Marc are experienced leaders in their respective fields, with strong track records of helping businesses scale.

“We’re excited to welcome both to our leadership team, as the company enters a new phase of growth to gear up to IPO.”

Kukkonen’s new role will involve heading up Busuu’s engineering teams in London and Madrid, overseeing development of the platform’s language teaching capabilities.

Munier, meanwhile, will take charge of Busuu for Business, the company’s corporate offering, which has over 200 clients around the world.

Both of the new executives, who will be based in Busuu’s London headquarters, were hired following the acquisition of video tutoring service Verbling.

“Language learning is still in its first steps to becoming digitalised, and has only seen the first promises of what impact personalised learning can have,” said Joonas Kukkonen, CTO at Busuu.

“Busuu has started on this journey by enhancing lessons through the use of machine learning technology and is in a position to change how we learn languages.”

Marc Munier, CCO at Busuu, said: “Busuu has ambitious plans to dominate the corporate language training sector, and I’m incredibly excited to help it realise its growth potential in the market.

“There are plenty of great things about Busuu that attracted me to the company, from its experienced team and company culture to its clear objectives, and the fact that it scaled fast out of its own cash flow – which is quite a rare find in the startup world.”
