Acer buys Gateway

Taiwanese computer maker Acer has announced plans to buy US based PC manufacturer Gateway, for $710 (£352) million.

The deal will see the newly merged company become the world’s third largest computer maker, behind Hewlett-Packard and Dell.

In a joint statement Acer’s President Gianfranco Lanci said that while the company’s presence was strong in Europe and Asia, the merger “completes Acer’s global footprint by strengthening our US presence.”

The two companies also expect to benefit from “considerable savings”, as the increase in scale will reduce procurement and component costs and allow the newly formed company to maximise back-office efficiencies.
